Bill Impact ($): The total cost per customer annually due to uneconomic dispatch practices and gross losses accumulated by utility.

Percent of Bill (%): The percent of customer bill annually that could be removed by running coal plants economically by utility.

Number of Customers

Number of customers in each utility’s service territory. The number of individual people may be higher if more than one person is using energy at a particular location (e.g. multi-person households).

Energy Burden

Energy burden is the percentage of household income that goes toward energy costs and is an indicator of household energy affordability. A household is considered to have energy burden if this percentage is more than 6%.

The map and state aggregation are based on utility ownership.

The utility energy burden data is based on the Utility Transition Hub’s Customer and Community dataset. This dataset is limited by FERC 1 filings and thus energy burden is not calculated for all utilities in this dashboard. Income groups are differentiated by percentage of area median income (AMI). The lowest income group includes all customers whose income is below 30% of AMI, and the highest income group includes all customers above AMI (100%+).

The Dispatch Dashboard does not analyze cogeneration plants or any generators under 25 MW.

Data year 2023 is only projected and is not final until EIA 923 releases their annual 923 data.
